Odd Girl Out

Odd Girl Out

During elementary school, I had a friend who was very bossy. He had to have everything his way, and had to make everyone listen to him. One day, this friend got mad because another kid pushed him and called him stupid, and he came running to me. He told me that he wanted to start a group so that he can get back at him. He also said whoever joined gets a cookie everyday at lunchtime. I joined and so did a whole bunch of people. Everyday we had to make fun of the other kid and not let him play with us, to get a free cookie. The kid soon started to cry and everyone left the group hoping not to get in trouble.
When I was in the group, nothing was even more important to me than getting a cookie. I felt sorry for hurting the kid, but then I remembered that he shoved my friend. I felt trapped. My options were to help the kid and be made fun of too or follow along and get a free cookie. Any elementary kid would have chosen the second option anyways, but now I feel bad and I would have probably ditched the group and just made a new batch of friends.
There are many different bullies in the world. Some bullies bully because they want something. Others bully because they want to hurt someone. Some bully because they like having power over someone. Others do it to seek revenge. Finally, some bully because they are bored and just want to have fun messing with a kid.  The only way to get the other person’s attention is to hurt him/her. Bullies want their peers to fear him/her so they can listen to them and do whatever they want. They will do anything they can to make someone feel afraid. I think that bullies are clever in what they do, but I am sure the kid being bully could be smart too and tell an adult.
